How NOT to Get Your Canadian Book Published!
- Contact all the self-publishing companies you can find and get sucked into paying them thousands of dollars and allowing them to OWN YOUR book and having to pay a way-too-high wholesale price to buy your own book that you wrote!
- Find the cheapest self-publisher and still pay way too much to allow someone else to basically OWN your book!
- Find a printer, look at a few of the books they have printed and then ask them what it would cost to get yours printed. Actually this is an okay way to go BUT it is still going to cost you a lot because you will have to pay a wholesale price for your books which could be as low as $5 depending on the genre of the book and at least you will OWN YOUR OWN BOOK. I did this but I did not know any better ways at the time. Now I do!
- Pay an agent way too much money to represent you and approach publishers about publishing your book. Now I must admit I know the least about this one but my understanding is that it is STILL WAY MORE EXPENSIVE than it has to be. After all the agent is going to work for you and needs to earn money.
"How do I KNOW these are the best methods of getting published?" you may ask. Good question! I am a very thorough researcher! I do not give up until the last publisher, printer, online method of publishing has been checked! I checked all over North America to find the best way to publish a book! I read every free or even some digital books which cost some money written by other authors.
However I STUMBLED upon Smashwords.com after I did all that research! Smashwords will convert your book written on a word processor to any and all digital formats known to man or woman!
Smashwords Cost? $0.00! NADA! ZILCH! NOTHING! Why?
They do not say but after reading their site and their free digital books I figured that they offer all the digital books converted through them to online and normal libraries as well as online and bricks-and-mortar bookstores. So obviously these bookstores are going to pay a fee above the cost the author sets for his/her digital book and that is how I believe they make some money to keep their site going. That is one thing you have to agree to. A very small price to pay I would say to get all these conversions done.
HOW TO GET YOUR CANADIAN (OR ANY) BOOK PUBLISHED!
I learned about the best way to get your book published in Canada or the U.S. or perhaps several or even many other places! But I did #3, [paid a printer on the advice of several other published authors].
It is not that getting a printer to print your books is wrong. It IS cheaper than the other methods, BUT, you will want to buy a quantity of your books to sell and it will still cost you more than the best method!
I admit I have only published one book but I checked out every method very thoroughly, asked other authors who had already had books printed and THEN I STUMBLED ON TO THE BEST METHOD OF GETTING YOUR BOOK PUBLISHED!!!
Okay first, most sources suggest that you prepare a digital version of your book as this method is attracting many more people than it used to because someone going on vacation and wanting to read can have 100 books on their tablet or reader and the tablet will NOT be any heavier than if there was only ONE book on the tablet!
HOW TO PUBLISH A DIGITAL VERSION
OF YOUR BOOK!
Check Smashwords.com and download their free books and guides as to how to prepare your word processor-created book for them to convert it to digital.
You qualify for Premium which means your book can be in the list of books sold to libraries, bookstores and the like. If it is not edited well enough, then they will still convert it if it adheres to their minimum standards.
So there you have it! I just saved you hours of time doing what I did and publishing on Amazon Kindle Publishing when Smashwords will do it for you! You can send all the money you wish to my address here in beautiful Fonthill, Ontario in the Niagara Peninsula! :)
But you still do not know the BEST WAY to get a paperback or even a hard cover book published!
THE BEST WAY TO GET YOUR PAPERBACK BOOK PUBLISHED IN NORTH AMERICA!
You follow the guidelines on the site and when you feel your book is ready to upload, you can get a proof copy sent to you for probably less than $5 or at least around $5. The proofs cost very little but the shipping brings the cost up.
Then you can read over the whole book several times and get some others to read it too so that you can really see if it is ready to go to print!
Another advantage of using Smashwords is that you can use your digital book that you prepared for listing on Smashwords.com and copy it into CREATESPACE.COM.
BUT CHECK THEIR GUIDELINES FIRST!
Another reason for using Smashwords.com is that they have lists of editors that will probably charge much less than the CreateSpace editors. I actually paid someone about $50 to look over my book to make sure it got into the Premium Smashwords list.
I do not know for sure, but you would probably pay another editor much more than $50 to edit your 130 page book.
